Yes, I'm still here. I just haven't been posting to this blog. What have I been doing instead? Well! I'm glad you asked, 'cause I've been busy.

First there was all the extra inventory that needed to be dyed or spun for upcoming events: the Tomato Festival is next Saturday. We're doing a pop-up at New River Fiber Company the following weekend. And Wilderness Trail Festival the beginning of September. Lots of venues lots of yarns needing to be dyed and spun... and I wish I had time to find the batteries for the camera take some more pictures and get them uploaded so you can see all the new stuff!

Then, last weekend I was demonstrating spinning and carding at an 18th century encampment. So there was also much sewing of things to wear that would be period appropriate. Do you know none of my 18th century costumes still fit.... something to do with making them when I was still a teenager and having learned to cook and bake really yummy fattening foods since then. Oh well. Good thing I can still sew. Now, I also wish I had a photo of that to put in here -- but do you know? I forgot my camera. Still, I know at least 3 people took video of me spinning, and more than a dozen asked if they could take pictures ... maybe I'll run across a photo of myself somewhere online someday.

And then (I said I've been busy) we've been working on the website. It's not done yet. But I'm pleased to announce that Best Friend Fibers is officially online at bestfriendfibers.com. So exciting!

Later this month I will be looking into getting myself cloned so that the housework doesn't get as neglected as this blog.

Everybody online suggested that Practicing your booth set-up at home first would make it easier to set up when you got to your event. So I practiced for this new direction that my life is taking. A table full of wool, hand-dyed. some handspun even, yarns and fluff.

Simon found a baby bird in the garden. I was mowing the yard and he was "on point" pointing to the bottom rung of a tomato tower where this little guy was chirping away.

The poor little thing seemed scared, stunned, and a little wet. I 'm not sure Simon hadn't already tried to eat it... or lick it... or eat it. He was quite sure I shouldn't have anything to do with it though.

This is Simon's barking face. He was not ready to share his mommy with a bird. As far as he was concerned, I was giving aide and comfort to the enemy and he repeatedly ordered me to leave that baby bird alone. Now! Mommy!

The bird meanwhile seemed quite at home on my finger, on my shoulder, even on the camera. When it fluttered to the camera it had a sort of "Are you my mother?" vibe. (Anyone remember that classic kids book? Good stuff.)

So safe resting spot was found, where the little bird could rest and recover.

By afternoon it had moved to the hammock rope, and by evening it was gone.

Be well baby bird.

Or rather, what goes in is the leftover flooring from when I re-did the studio and there were two boxes extra and even though a couple of the boards were warped a bit I still made it work for the bathroom with just bits and pieces and only one and a half planks leftover from this job. Oh Yeah!
Did I mention I had already primed (2 coats) all of the new drywall and painted (Benjamin Moore, Dove White) the wall where the toilet and sink needed to be installed. I had.

My version of a "Dove Bar" in the freezer.

Here's a handy tip I learned ages ago: If you are only going to be taking a break from painting and come right back to it in the next day or two then don't clean your paint brush. Freeze it instead. Wrapped in aluminium foil and frozen the paint brush or roller will last up to a week even. This will save you all the wasted latex paint you get when cleaning out between uses. It takes a little while to thaw out but it works really well.

So while the paint brushes and rollers full of primer and Dove White paint waited in the freezer the floor went in.

I am proud of how well I managed jigging into the corners and such.

The power was still on in the living room so that was the staging area where I cut all the boards to size. There was a lot of sawdust. A lot!

Those boxes on the left are the sink and toilet waiting to go in.

Eventually the floor was done, and with aching bones (slightly warped boards take a lot of pounding to be convinced to lay flat properly) I went to borrow the functioning plumbing at the Wise Woman's house for a hot shower. After all, my hair may be going grey, but it really shouldn't be going Dove White!
The plummer I found to help with the work recommended a durable fiberglass tub with horizontal seams in the surround. It's supposed to not get as gringy. (You know what that word means right? Even though I made it up?)

Progress is being made. Okay, the new tub is not hooked into the plumbing yet, but at least it's in place!

Fiberglass bat insulation now fills the space between the studs of the exterior wall. Eighth inch ply sheaths the floor for a clean level surface, and the new tub finally wandered in from the living room. But what do I see in that photos? I'm not loving those oddly ornate pulls on the cupboard -- I think I have some old white porcelain ones somewhere I can use instead. (I did. Happiness!)
(Also, "At Last" the song will be my earworm for the duration of this post if not the rest of the day. Thank you, Billie Holiday.)

I could blame the delay on the two (Two!) times my supposedly immune laptop got virused and had to be wiped and reset, but I suspect the delay was more along the lines of I just didn't make the blog a priority and was busy doing other things. Sorry about that. Photos of "other things" will be forthcoming. (No really, I promise.)

Let us begin with the bathroom demo:

Evidence that the bathroom was once tiled with real tile.
Was chipped, mismatched, poorly installed "faux tile" board really an upgrade?

While I realize that circa 1950 tile means that that plaster was probably once back of pink and black, powder blue, or mint green tiles... was that really so bad that some previous owner needed to remove it and do a crap job with crap wallboard? (I'm blaming the "flipper" who took cheapo shortcuts in the kitchen too.)

Dealing with what's left -- the plaster -- that's a lot to rip out, so we'll be using a 1/4 drywall later floor to ceiling to evenly cover the whole wall with a clean surface.
There are times when I "try, try again" because the pattern is rubbish (my own or someone else's even) and times when it takes me forever to finish because I'm just not feeling it.

It's not that I don't knit at a relatively decent speed, it's more that I keep remembering something my great-grandmother made or showed me how to make, stitches she used, cast ons and offs, the way she told me to hold my yarn -- these things are treasures buried in my memory. Lost for years, they tend to come to light half way through a project, changing everything.

Suddenly the perfectly fine way the modern pattern or youtube video says to do it isn't nearly as neat (Granny was strict about having a neat back and front to your knitting), or easy (you simply cannot beat years and years of accumulated tricks and tips that get handed down from knitter to knitter), or right as the way she taught me all those years ago. I become dissatisfied with the work, rip it out, and start again.

In the end, I want my finished pieces to look like they could have come off of her needles. Like they carry on the traditions she learned as a child at her granny's knee and passed on to me when I was a wee one at her knee. As though these American born designs of mine have that soft, slightly Scottish accent tying them to my heritage and the long line of talented women who somehow knit my DNA from their own.Kiinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11842294398414449651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6666688907086940749.post-14260630008265412492016-04-16T03:00:00.000-04:002016-04-16T03:00:08.061-04:00More Hand Supn

When the work in progress (wip) was not progressing, and I had "used all my lifelines" and it still wasn't coming out right. I gave in and swatched. The swatch didn't balance either. Now I will admit that my first thought was that I was doing something wrong. After all, how much lace have I really knit? Not enough to think myself an expert by any means. So I swatched again. Still wrong.

At this point I began to question both my sanity and the pattern. I googled for the supposedly traditional Shetland lace pattern by the name given on the pattern... yeah, not exactly the same. Having found a sample graph elsewhere (thank you Google!) my swatch from this second source's instructions turned out perfect the first time.

It is also worth noting that among the sample graphs of the new source I found several other patterns which I think I might like even better.Kiinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11842294398414449651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6666688907086940749.post-3538291547026130442016-04-10T01:30:00.000-04:002016-04-09T22:46:17.951-04:00Swatching Lace

From my samples I learned much. I need work on blocking, I like size 2 needles best with this yarn (Silk & Mohair 2ply lace yarn), I prefer the invisible cast on, and I don't think swatching for lace on something that has no real size (scarf/stole) does anything more than tell you if you can knit the pattern right.
So, I didn't swatch for the big project after all. I just plunged right in.
*cough*
Yes, I have frogged (again) the Shetland Stole I decided to do for my first big lace project.
But as this will be my first "real lace" knitting and, naturally, I picked something traditional and complicated, I don't feel like that's a horrible thing. I am thinking though that maybe I will just run a couple life lines in before I even finish the repeat - I seem to go wrong in my count somewhere around row seven. So a life line in row 4 or 5 maybe. Better safe than sorry right? After all, you can only rip out your knitting so many times before the yarn turns back to fuzz, and some forward momentum would be nice.Kiinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11842294398414449651noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6666688907086940749.post-20821981410607766522016-04-09T14:26:00.004-04:002016-04-09T14:53:57.524-04:00Simon Says: Snow Day

Actually, right now Simon is saying nothing; he is too busy curling himself into comfortable positions on the blanket near the fire. He has positioned himself so that when the sun shines in the window it shines on him, and when the clouds blow over, while still nice and cozy, he can watch snow falling down on some of the other neighborhood dogs.

Simon does not particularly like the other neighborhood dogs, but on cold days he feels quite sorry for them being left outside. I have to admit there is occasionally a certain indolent smugness about him as he watches them through the window. He goes outside too, of course, but he gets to come back in. They have to stay outside.

Did I mention? It is snowing today! We woke on this April morning in the "sunny south" to a dusting of snow. The daffodils are blooming and nodding at the snow flurries as they fall, the veggies look a bit nipped around the edges after their cold night, and the cherry, plum, and apple blossoms threaten not to become fruit if it is going to be this cold.
Meanwhile, snug inside with Simon, I have finally downloaded pictures from the camera (as you can see) and am updating this blog, so you are looking at icy snowy pictures from February. Not really representative of today's light dusting and wind swept flurries, but that's okay, right?
Simon has moved to the couch beside me, curling up on a different blanket, still with a view of the window but with less of a draft. He knows I'm blogging about him. Stay warm out there, he says.
Title to be something along the lines of: yes you can still sort of live in your one bathroom house while the plumbers rip out and replace every broken, molding bit of that one bathroom and spiff things up until it is fabulous, or at least as fab as it can be for an 8'x6' room with that much plumbing squeezed into it (but shorter and with aforementioned photos).

Photos of various knitting and sewing projects, cute Simon shots, and pics of Hooray! Spring! flowers (crocus) and assorted outdoor getting the garden ready project pictures are currently suffering from a similar fate. Which explains why this post has no accompanying eye-candy.

I will get to it. I don't know when.

Soon though. Soon.Kiinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11842294398414449651noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6666688907086940749.post-23419069761895085282016-02-13T14:29:00.000-05:002016-02-13T14:29:02.403-05:00Happy Valentine's Day

It's not supposed to yell like that is it? Simon asks as the spinning wheel squeaks and sqicks and squaks loudly. I am spinning up some of my hand dyed Falkland wool from my first experiments with breaking Wilton.

No. I tell him. It's not supposed to. And I spend some time hunting for the right oil to oil the wheel with. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. I say laughing to myself.

Simon eyes me.

What would a barking wheel get? he asks. Could I get some grease too?

I take the hint and we get our lunch.

That's much better. That, I can sleep through. Simon says when his belly is full and the wheel is humming quietly again.
