Water freezes in the soil and these ice crystals, known around here as "frost heave" crunch underfoot. Turned up by passing boots they glint in the afternoon sun. The texture of the soil is changed. The liquid hidden texture of the water becomes the glinting, crystal ice in monochromatic shades of clear shining and white. Against the soil from which it springs, the contrast between dirt and gleaming refraction is dramatic.
